Why Aether

Why choose us

Every operator in Bhutan will tell you they are local, experienced and passionate. Here is what is actually different, in terms you can check.

The premise

Bhutan is a fixed
price. We are not.

Here is something no one tells you: a large part of what you pay to visit Bhutan is set by the government and identical whoever you book with. The Sustainable Development Fee does not vary. Entrance fees do not vary. The country itself costs the same.

What varies is everything else — which guide walks with you, which rooms you get, whether the days are ordered intelligently, and whether anyone tells you the truth when your plan is a bad one.

That is the whole argument for choosing carefully. Not price. Judgement.

The difference

Six things you can check

Not claims about passion. Things you can hold us to.

01

One guide, the whole way

Not a different person in each valley. The same guide and the same driver from Paro arrivals to Paro departures — people you will know properly by the end.

02

Written by hand, not assembled

Every proposal is drafted for you, with the reasoning shown. If you receive a document with stock paragraphs and someone else’s dates lightly edited, you are not reading ours.

03

We say no

If your dates are wrong for what you want, we will tell you. If a cheaper route serves you better, we will recommend it. We would rather lose the booking than build a trip we do not believe in.

04

We have slept there

We stay in the properties we book, repeatedly, and we drop them when standards slip. No hotel is on our list because of a commission arrangement.

05

Fewer guests, on purpose

We take a limited number of journeys each season. A trip designed carefully cannot be designed at volume, and we are not interested in pretending otherwise.

06

We live here

Thimphu, not a sales office abroad. When something changes on the ground — weather, a road, a festival date — the person fixing it is in the same country as you.

A fair comparison

How trips usually get built

This is not a caricature. It is the standard model, and for many travellers it is perfectly adequate.

The usual way

How we do it

The people who matter most

Your guide is the trip

Everything else can be arranged by anyone with a booking system. The guide cannot. A good one knows the abbot, reads the weather, understands when to explain a mural and when to let you stand in front of it in silence.

Bhutan licenses all guides and every one of them has passed the national examination. That sets a floor, not a ceiling. The difference between a competent guide and a memorable one is enormous, and it is the single largest variable in how your journey feels.

We keep a small roster, pay above the going rate, and match the guide to the guest rather than to the calendar. You will be told who yours is, and why we chose them, before you travel.

What you can expect

Our side of the arrangement

Concrete commitments rather than adjectives.

A reply from a person

Within one working day, from Thimphu — not an auto-responder and not a template.

An itemised price

You will see what the government takes, what the hotels cost, and what we charge. No bundled mystery.

Honest seasonal advice

Including being told that your dates are wrong, if they are, before you book flights.

A number that answers

A local phone that is picked up while you are in the country, at any hour.

No pressure

We do not chase, and we do not manufacture urgency about rooms that are not actually going.

Your plans, revised freely

Drafts are part of the process. Change your mind as often as you need to.

[Add your Tourism Council of Bhutan licence number and any memberships here — ABTO, ATTA. A licence number is the single most reassuring thing you can publish, and every serious competitor shows one.]

Test us on it

Ask us something difficult

Send the question you think will be awkward to answer — about price, about season, about what Bhutan is genuinely like in July. That is the fastest way to judge whether we are the right people.
