Overview

The journey

Most itineraries are a list of things to get through. This one is the opposite. Three valleys, long stays, and mornings that begin with meditation rather than a departure time — designed for travellers who are tired in a way that another packed schedule will not fix.

The framework is Bhutanese rather than borrowed: sitting practice with a monk in an empty temple before the day starts, a sound bath with singing bowls, hot stone baths in the traditional way, and a nightly rhythm that has you outside in the dark looking at more stars than you are used to.

There is still a country here to see, and you will see it — Taktsang, Punakha Dzong, the Phobjikha valley floor. But nothing is scheduled tightly, no day has more than one fixed commitment, and cancelling something because you would rather sit is an entirely acceptable outcome.

Itinerary

Day by day

Day
01

Arrive Paro

Met at arrivals and taken straight to the lodge. Nothing at all scheduled. Dinner when you want it, and an early night.

Overnight Paro · 2,200 m
Day
02

Paro — settling

A short valley walk in the morning and a hot stone bath in the afternoon: river stones heated in a fire and lowered into a wooden tub of water and artemisia. It is the oldest wellness practice in Bhutan and still the best.

Overnight Paro
Day
03

Taktsang

The Tiger’s Nest, started early and walked slowly, with as many stops as you want. There is no schedule to keep and the descent can take as long as it takes.

Hike 5 – 6 hrs · Overnight Paro
Day
04

Paro to Thimphu

A short transfer, then a sound bath in the afternoon — singing bowls, an hour, in a quiet room. Most people sleep through part of it, which is the point.

Drive 1 hr · Overnight Thimphu · 2,320 m
Day
05

Thimphu to Punakha

Over the Dochula early, when the Himalaya is most likely to be out, and down into the warm valley. Afternoon unstructured.

Drive 3 hrs · Overnight Punakha · 1,200 m
Day
06

Punakha — meditation morning

Sitting practice with a monk in a temple before it opens to anyone else — half an hour of instruction, half an hour of silence. The rest of the day is yours; most people walk to Khamsum Yulley or do nothing.

Overnight Punakha
Day
07

Punakha to Phobjikha

Up into the glacial valley. The floor walk here is flat, wide and quiet, and there is no reason to hurry any part of it. Cranes from November.

Drive 3 hrs · Overnight Phobjikha · 3,000 m
Day
08

Phobjikha to Paro

West again, with a long lunch on the way. A final hot stone bath and dinner in the valley.

Drive 5 hrs · Overnight Paro
Day
09

Depart

Breakfast, and the airport when you are ready.

This is a starting point

If there is something in this you would rather not do — the meditation, the sound bath, the walking — say so. Removing things is the whole idea.
