Overview

The journey

There is a small circuit of lodges in Bhutan — one in each of five valleys — designed so that you move west to east without ever changing standard. Same service, same kitchen philosophy, same quiet. It is the most comfortable way to see the country and, for travellers who value consistency, comfortably the best.

This journey follows that circuit at an unhurried pace: Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang, with two nights in most and three where the valley deserves it. Between them the drives are broken with walks, picnics laid out on a ridge, and stops that are not on anybody’s standard itinerary.

What the lodges cannot give you is access, and that is our part: a private blessing arranged with a lama, dinner in a heritage farmhouse, and an early start at Taktsang that has you at the monastery before the first coach reaches the car park.

Itinerary

Day by day

Day
01

Arrive Paro

Met on the tarmac side of arrivals and driven the short distance to the first lodge. Nothing scheduled — an afternoon to arrive properly, and dinner whenever you want it.

Overnight Paro · 2,200 m
Day
02

Paro — Taktsang

A pre-dawn start with a packed breakfast. You reach the Tiger’s Nest early enough to have the inner chapels close to yourself. Spa in the afternoon.

Hike 5 – 6 hrs · Overnight Paro
Day
03

Paro to Thimphu

A short drive, and the capital at your own pace — the textile academy, a thangka studio, or nothing at all. The lodge here is the quietest building in Thimphu.

Drive 1 hr · Overnight Thimphu · 2,320 m
Day
04

Thimphu

The Buddha Dordenma early, before the light gets hard. Lunch in town, and an afternoon left deliberately open.

Overnight Thimphu
Day
05

Thimphu to Punakha

Over the Dochula, stopping properly at the 108 chortens rather than for the usual ten minutes. Picnic laid out on a ridge on the descent, and into the warm valley by mid-afternoon.

Drive 3 hrs · Overnight Punakha · 1,200 m
Day
06

Punakha

Punakha Dzong in the morning light. In the afternoon, the walk up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten through the paddy — an hour up, and the best view in the valley at the top.

Overnight Punakha
Day
07

Punakha — private blessing

A morning arranged privately: a lama receives you in a temple that is not open to general visitors, and the ceremony is conducted for your party alone. Afternoon free.

Overnight Punakha
Day
08

Punakha to Gangtey

Up into the glacial valley of Phobjikha. The lodge looks straight down it. Afternoon walk on the valley floor, and if you are here between November and February, the cranes.

Drive 3 hrs · Overnight Gangtey · 3,000 m
Day
09

Gangtey to Bumthang

East over the Pele La and through Trongsa, where we stop at the dzong and the tower museum above it. Into Bumthang by late afternoon.

Drive 6 hrs · Overnight Bumthang · 2,600 m
Day
10

Bumthang

The oldest temples in the kingdom — Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang — in the morning, unhurried. Dinner in a heritage farmhouse, arranged for your party.

Overnight Bumthang
Day
11

Bumthang to Paro

The domestic flight west if it is running, otherwise the drive with an overnight break — we will advise honestly when we plan. Last evening in Paro.

This is a starting point

Lodge availability is the constraint on this journey, not the route. For October and the festival weeks, twelve months ahead is not too early.
